After our time in splendid Seville, it was time to leave Spain and continue towards Portugal. We are heading towards Evora in Portugal’s Alentejo region. Looking at the map, Seville doesn’t look that far from Evora. The driving distance is only 320 km and you could cover that with your car in under 4 hours. Don’t have your own wheels? There are no direct buses between Seville and Evora. Doing the journey in stages though is pretty easy and straightforward, if a little time-consuming. We found two possible routes.
Option 1: Take a bus from Seville to Merida in Spain and then transfer to another bus which will take you to Evora. This option is a little more expensive and it takes longer.
Option 2: Take a bus from Seville to Faro in Portugal. Transfer here for another bus which might or might not take you directly to Evora. Obviously, this bus journey should be your choice to get you from Seville to Evora. Taking transfers in mind you should be able to reach Evora from Seville by bus in just over 7 hours.

Book Your Bus Tickets Online
Tickets can be booked online, so there is no need to go to the bus terminal before your departure. Use the Spanish bus company, ALSA, for the Seville to Faro leg. When booking your ticket, make sure that you are going to Faro, not Faro Airport. Give yourself at least 30 minutes of leeway before boarding the next bus in case of delays. Also, keep in mind that there is a 1-hour time difference between Spain and Portugal. Portugal is 1 hour behind Spain.
Book your ticket from Faro to Evora on the Portuguese bus company, Rede Expressos. Both these bus companies have Apps you can download to your phone for even more convenience.
When booking your ticket you can also choose your seats. We recommend taking seats 1 and 2 if they are available, as they have more space. You don’t need to print out the ticket. A screenshot will suffice. Wifi is available on all the buses which we travelled with.
Bus from Seville to Faro
Depart Seville: 09:00
Arrive Faro: 11:00 (Portugal Time is 1 hour behind Spain)

Buses leave to Faro regularly from Plaza de Armas bus station in Seville. A taxi from in front of the Seville cathedral to the bus station costs €5. Electronic screens will show which bay your bus will depart from.
As with most other European countries, you will simply cross the border at a sign saying Welcome to Portugal or something like that. There are no border formalities, so you’ll stay on the bus until you arrive in Faro.
Transfer in Faro
A bright green sign saying Bem Vindo a Faro greets the coach as it pulls into the bus terminal in Faro. We had just over an hour before our next bus to Evora would depart. There is a lovely little cafe just across the street where you can get a nice breakfast while you wait for the next bus.

Our next bus arrived right on schedule. We found the Portuguese bus certainly more comfortable and spacious than the one in Spain. Our ticket shows that we should transfer in Albufeira which is about 1 hour away from Faro. The transfer stop is only 15 minutes though, so just long enough to stretch your legs, go to the bathroom and stock up on some snacks before boarding the bus to Evora. We arrived in Albufeira at 13:00 and departed for Evora on the new bus at 13:15.
As the bus heads inland, the scenery changes from coastal greens to yellow and brown which is typical to the Alentejo region. Cork trees and vineyards are interrupted only by white villages.
The bus makes only one stop halfway to Evora for about 10 minutes.
Arrival in Evora
Evora bus station is located about a 10-minute walk outside the city wall. If you are travelling with a backpack you’ll be fine walking into town, however, if you have a wheelie carrier get a taxi.
