Vienna Christmas Markets 2026: Our Eight Faves With Lost of Photos & Info

The best way to experience Christmas in Vienna is through its markets. Here are 8 of the city’s most beautiful, from grand squares to cosy old-town gems.
Do I smell glühwein?
Yup, I do!

To say Vienna is magical in December is underselling it. Christmas in Vienna is less a season and more a spell you willingly fall under. Chandeliers strung along the Graben glow like a ballroom under the stars, the scent of glühwein and roasted nuts curls through the air and mingle with distant carols drifting out of market squares framed by palaces and baroque facades.

When we planned our Christmas trip to Europe, we looked forward to magical Advent markets, mulled wine, and Christmas vibes. Vienna delivered. Man, did it deliver!

Vienna Christmas markets aren’t pop-ups, but curated rituals. Every stall is vetted for craftsmanship and charm, so you won’t find Temo bargains or plastic tat here, just real handmade decorations, warming food, and raised mugs standing as tiny monuments to the season.

We spent four days in Vienna tracing the glow from square to square, each market offering its own take on festive magic. Here are the ones that made our holiday unforgettable.

Quick Guide to Vienna’s Christmas Markets

When are Vienna’s Christmas Markets? Early to mid-November (first markets start 6 November) Most wrap up by 23–26 Dec; a few stay open into early Jan (e.g., Schönbrunn until 6 Jan)

Opening hours: Vienna’s Christmas markets are usually open for business from mid-morning until 8 or 9 pm. Some stay open later on weekends. Reduced hours on Christmas Eve.

Entrance fee: All the markets we visited were free of charge. We assume that is the norm for all the Christmas markets in Vienna.

Take cash: While electronic transactions are available, take some euros in cash just in case. Some stalls only take cash.

Best time: Late afternoon, when dusk hits but the stalls still have space, and evening concerts start. After dark, when the lights go on, is when the magic really kicks in. It’s beautiful. It’s also a lot busier after dark, so prepare yourself mentally for some crowds.

Christmas market mugs: Each market has a unique mug, which makes useful souvenirs. When you buy a drink at the market, you must pay a mug deposit (€4 or €5). At the end of your visit, you could keep the mug as a souvenir or return it to any stall to get your deposit back.

Still planning your trip? We stayed at the Weekend Hotel and loved it. It comes HIGHLY recommended.

Our first market was at Schloss Schönbrunn, and it set the bar pretty high. We loved the large market, which had a wide variety of food, drinks, and Christmas souvenirs for sale.

One of Vienna’s most picturesque Christmas markets is set against the stunning backdrop of Schloss Schönbrunn, the former Habsburg palace. We arrived late afternoon, just in time for the last guided tour of the palace. After oohing and aahing at the over-the-top Baroque interiors, we were excited to experience our first Christmas market in Vienna.

We loved the good variety of drinks here, such as glühwein, glüh-gin 🤩 ,punsch, schnapps, and hot chocolate. As it was our first Christmas market (and we came from the Middle East), we wasted no time getting into the festive spirit.

The market also offers an array of handcrafted gifts, from delicate ornaments to cosy knitted goods and unique toys, each perfect for gifting or taking home as a souvenir. This is the best market for buying souvenirs and Christmas decorations.

As for entertainment, we enjoyed some high-pitched carols sung by a choir, and the bicycle-powered merry-go-round for the kids was fun to watch.

Stephansplatz Christmas Market

The St. Stephen’s Cathedral Christmas Market is truly special, set right in the heart of Vienna’s pedestrianised historic centre. With the magnificent Stephansdom towering above, the festive lights and wooden stalls create a magical contrast against the Gothic architecture.

After visiting the cathedral, one of Vienna’s most iconic buildings, we just couldn’t pass up a mug of hot chocolate at one of the wooden chalets. This market has a mix of things to buy, but snacks and drinks are the thing here.

Being a small market (about 40 stalls) at one of Vienna’s top attractions, the market gets busy with locals popping in for a drink after work and tourists taking a break between sightseeing.

The Rathaus Christmas Market, set in front of Vienna’s grand City Hall (Rathaus), is the city’s most glamorous and lively festive market. Walking into the market filled with lights and cheer, I remember thinking: This is what a Christmas market should look like. This was the – cliche-alert – magical Christmas wonderland people dream of when planning a December trip to Europe.

The vast market has about 100 stalls offering everything from handcrafted decorations to Austrian delicacies like Kaiserschmarrn and gingerbread. Of course, we had a mug of glühwein, which we enjoyed while watching the lights and keeping our hands warm. Families skated on the nearby ice rink, and the beautifully lit Rathaus provided the perfect backdrop. Life was pretty perfect.

For the best photos of the Christkindlmarkt on Rathausplatz, walk up the steps of the Burgtheater across the street. From here, you’ll get a fine view of the entire City Hall, with the Christmas tree and the market in front of it.

Ice skating costs € 10/9 for adults/children, and skates can be rented for € 9. Helmets are also available for free. The rink is open daily from 10 AM to 10 PM.

Karlsplatz Christmas Market

The Karlsplatz Christmas Market is one of Vienna’s most unique festive spots. It is set in front of the stunning Baroque Karlskirche (St. Charles Church), making it—like most other Vienna Christmas markets—simply beautiful.

Karlsplatz Christmas Market is quite large, with about 80 stalls, and we loved the lively atmosphere. It almost felt like a festival, popular with the younger crowd. Must be because the Vienna University of Technology is right next door.

Karlsplatz Christmas Market also goes by the name of Art Advent, hinting at its strong focus on craftsmanship and sustainability. Everything sold here (think hand-thrown ceramics, wood carvings, hand-knitted woollens, etc.) is carefully handmade by artisans and has to satisfy the criteria set by the Divina Arts Association, which runs the market.

The Karlskirche hosts Vivaldi’s Four Seasons concert. If we had known this before our visit, we would’ve loved to pair some classical music with a few hot alcoholic beverages at the Christmas market afterwards.
Next time, heh?

Maria Theresien Platz

Update 2025: Maria-Theresien-Platz will skip its Christmas market in 2025 due to construction work in the square. So if you’re on a museum marathon, don’t expect a mug of punch as you hop between the Naturhistorisches and Kunsthistorisches museums. I’m keeping the info and pictures up for 2026 and after.

The Christmas Market at Maria-Theresien-Platz is another stunning festive spot between Vienna’s grand museums. Standing in the centre of the square, flanked by the Kunsthistorisches Museum and Naturhistorisches Museum, I liked the slightly more relaxed atmosphere compared to the other uber-famous and glamorous markets. The elegant baroque buildings made for a breathtaking backdrop.

We had no choice but to walk through the market before visiting the Kunsthistorisches Museum. We loved the incredible chocolates that looked like rusty tools from the one stall, and I HAD to get a large pretzel-shaped bread because…why not?

Besides being pretty, the Christmas Market at Maria-Theresien-Platz is a great place to snack and rest while on your museum marathon in Vienna. The market also goes by Weihnachtsdorf on Maria-Theresien-Platz and has around 70 stalls.

Am Hoff

The Am Hof Christmas Market is a little gem in the heart of Vienna, offering a more tranquil and refined festive experience. Just like Vienna, Am Hof Christmas Market is a classy affair—that I could tell as soon as we walked into the square and I spotted the Champagne Bar chalet. This is fitting as the square used to house the city’s wine market, dating back to 1358.

Tucked away in one of the city’s oldest squares, it has a cosy, authentic charm that feels less touristy than some larger markets. With around 75 stalls, the market offers great food and quality crafts. With the beautiful buildings wrapped around the square, this market captures true Viennese elegance, making it perhaps the most beautiful Christmas market in Vienna.

Am Hof is not only the prettiest but also the best food market (we think). Aside from the stalls selling high-quality arts and crafts, Am Hof is a little gastronomic firecracker. We had fantastic langos (Hungarian deep-fried flatbread with cheese), gröstl (a potato speciality from Tyrol), and Lebkuchen (almost like gingerbread). We were warm and full.

Altwiener Christkindlmarkt / Freyung Christmas Market

The Altwiener Christkindlmarkt at Freyung is one of Vienna’s most traditional and charming Christmas markets. Set in the historic Freyung Square in the city centre, it is just a short walk from the Am Hof Market and just as beautiful. It has a wonderfully nostalgic feel, staying true to old Viennese traditions.

The market specializes in high-quality, handcrafted goods—delicate glass ornaments, hand-carved wooden nativity scenes, and intricately designed ceramics. Of course, there are the usual suspects: hot alcoholic drinks and yummy Christmas food. There are around 60 stalls at the Altwiener Market.

We enjoyed watching a brass band pump out a few carols during our visit, which was just great. After having a few cups of glühwein at the Stephansdom and Am Hof Markets, I was actually ready for some oompah music when we arrived at Freyung, but Stille Nacht, Heilige Nacht, and O Tannenbaum had to do.

Belvedere Christmas Market

All that oohing and aahing over Klimt’s masterpieces and other stunning works of art does work up an appetite. Praise be, the Belvedere Palace Christmas Market was waiting upon our exit.

Thanks to its palatial backdrop, this is yet another beautiful Christmas market in Vienna. The stunning Baroque Upper Belvedere, with the Christmas market chalets in front, would be a wonderful sight when lit up at night. We came here in the morning, though, and we were HUNGRY, so we beelined for the food stalls, and it was just grand.

Jin had some yummy churros, while I had a riesenkrapfen (a Berliner doughnut) filled with vanilla custard. They were sublime. Now, if you thought we oohed and aahed over Klimt’s Kiss, you should have heard us munching down our snacks at the Christmas market soon after!

Belvedere Palace Christmas Market makes a perfect eating stop after visiting the museum. We suspect it will be wonderfully romantic after dark and worth a trip alone to the market and strolling on the palace grounds.

  • Closest Subway: U1 (Hauptbanhof) is under 10 10-minute walk from the Belvedere. Otherwise, the D tram (Schloss Belvedere stop) drops you almost at the entrance.

Well, this should keep you occupied for some time. Hope you enjoy Vienna’s Christmas markets as much as we did. May the glühwein be hot and the souvenirs within your budget.
